Choosing the Right Light Bulbs and Lamps

Until relatively recently household lighting was mostly powered by incandescent or tungsten filament bulbs which had changed little since Thomas Edison patented his design in 1878. The problem with the old style bulbs was that they were inefficient and needed large amounts of electricity to give a worthwhile light output.

Only about 5% of the electricity used to power an incandescent bulb was turned into light, most of the rest of the power generated heat which was often unwanted and even unsafe.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps

Compact fluorescent lamps, also known as low energy bulbs, became a viable alternative from the mid 1980’s but at first were expensive. Production methods and demand soon reduced prices however and they became a very popular alternative to the incandescent bulb due to their significantly lower running costs, a CFL of around 11 watts gave roughly the same amount of light as a 60 watt incandescent bulb with much lower levels of heat.

CFL Bulbs

CFL bulbs are still very popular today and are likely to be around for a long time yet. However there is a newer technology which is rapidly becoming the standard and that is the LED bulb. The LED bulb uses even lower amounts of power than the CFL and only about 6 watts of LED lamp is needed to give the same output as a 60 watt incandescent. That is a saving of 90% which is a very significant saving.

Additionally they have an expected lifespan of 20 years or more so they can be pretty much a fit and forget item. Although prices are still higher than other bulbs they are coming down rapidly as demand increases but overall they are going to cost you less because of the power savings and the lifespan.

The Colour Of LED Light

One thing to be aware of when choosing LED bulbs is the colour of the light. As we are mostly used to incandescent bulbs with a warm colour to them we need to select an LED with a “warm white” colour or we may find them a bit uncomfortable to live with.

Also worth bearing in mind is that if you use dimmer switches you need to choose an LED bulb suitable for dimming. Other than that they are a straight swap and you can be saving money right from the moment you fit them.
